The Philadelphia Flyers are eyeing veteran defenseman John Carlson, a member of the Washington Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup-winning team, as a potential target this summer.
Carlson is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after completing the final season of his eight-year, $64 million contract.
He finished the 2025-26 campaign with the Anaheim Ducks after being acquired from Washington at the trade deadline.
The Flyers have struggled to generate consistent offense from the blue line and have been searching for a true power-play quarterback for several seasons.
Carlson could fill that role immediately, having put up impressive numbers this season with 14 goals and 60 points in 71 games split between Washington and Anaheim.
And his ability to move the puck and run a power play would be a major boost for Philadelphia.
The Flyers already have a promising group of young defensemen led by Jamie Drysdale, Oliver Bonk, and David Jiříček.
Bringing in a veteran like Carlson would give that group an experienced mentor who has played 149 playoff games and won a Stanley Cup.
The Flyers are currently 8th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-27 record, on a W3 streak, after losing 2-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes on 2026-05-09.
Carlson also has an existing relationship with Flyers assistant coach Todd Reirden from their years together in Washington.
Despite turning 36, Carlson is expected to attract plenty of interest in free agency, considering there are few top defensemen available this summer.
Before being traded to Anaheim, reports indicated he and Washington had discussed a two-year extension worth roughly $9 million per season.
That price would be significant, but a short-term contract could give Philadelphia a proven veteran without creating long-term salary cap concerns.
The Flyers' GM Danny Brière is expected to explore ways to strengthen the roster this offseason, and signing Carlson would be a major coup.
