The Philadelphia Flyers are in discussions with former captain Claude Giroux about a return to the team.
Giroux, now a free agent, spent the first 14.5 seasons of his NHL career with the Flyers.
The Flyers, currently 8th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-27 record and on a W3 streak, could use Giroux's veteran leadership and goal-scoring ability.
Daniel Briere, the Flyers' GM, confirmed the talks but stopped short of saying anything was close to being done.
Giroux is still playing at a high level, having scored 14 goals and 49 points while playing in all 82 regular-season games for the Ottawa Senators last year.
The 38-year-old native of Hearst, Ontario, has been connected to a return to the Flyers, where he was captain from 2013 until he was traded to the Florida Panthers in 2022.
The Flyers have always had great respect for Giroux, and now that the team is back to being a playoff contender, it makes sense to bring him back.
Giroux was drafted by the Flyers in the first round with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and played exactly 1,000 regular-season games with the team.
He scored 291 goals and 900 points with the Flyers before he was traded to the Panthers.
The Flyers could surely use his experience and skill next season, and a return to Philadelphia would be a homecoming for the veteran forward.
